Being a Host Family

There are many important questions to be taken into account when you are deciding if having a nanny is the right choice for you. Perhaps the first is, "What does this mean for me and my family?” quickly followed by “What are our rights and obligations?"

Having a live-in caregiver means that they will need a room to stay in and access to the basic amenities (bathroom, kitchen, etc.). They have the right to this room being private and to be able to lock the door. They have the right to a minimum standard of pay and working conditions, as determined by the Government of Canada. It is in everyone’s interest that the caregiver be given full consideration regarding his/her rights, as this protects everyone involved, even if some individuals or agencies might suggest that a wage can be set below minimum or that a room can be shared. Safety and security are integral to our values and guarantee you a quality that you can rely on.

If anything should ever go wrong, as an employer, you would be fully within your rights to replace your employee (the nanny). If you ever needed to do so urgently, this, too, would be your right.
